Stay Safe While Exploring

Safety concerns do not have to limit your spirit of adventure. A few simple steps can help seniors to travel and explore with confidence.

Before embarking on your journey, check in with your healthcare provider to review travel plans, medications, vaccinations, and any health concerns that may affect the trip. Pack prescriptions in their original labeled containers. It’s also a good idea to bring extra medication in case of delays. Keep a written list of medications, allergies, medical conditions, emergency contacts, and insurance information in a carry-on bag.

While planning the trip, build in time to rest, stay hydrated, and avoid overscheduling each day. Choose accessible lodging and transportation whenever possible. Share your itinerary with a trusted family member or friend, and keep a charged phone nearby so help is easy to reach if plans change or an emergency occurs.

Other useful travel tips:

  • Use the same mobility aids you rely on at home. If terrain is uneven, such as cobblestones, consider bringing a cane or travel scooter.
  • Plan outings for early morning or evening to avoid extreme heat. Bring an umbrella for rain or sun protection and wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.
  • Keep valuables secure by using a cross-body bag, an RFID wallet, and make use of  the hotel safe.
  • Look up the local emergency phone number, since not every country uses 911.
