A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting the oxygen and nutrients it needs.

There are three main types of strokes:

Ischemic Stroke (about 87% of strokes)

  • Caused by a blood clot or blocked artery in the brain.
  • Most common type.
  • Can result from atherosclerosis (plaque buildup).

Hemorrhagic Stroke

  • Caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, leading to bleeding.
  • Often linked to high blood pressure, aneurysms, or head injury.

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – also called a “mini-stroke”

  • Temporary blockage of blood flow.
  • Symptoms last a few minutes to hours, with no permanent damage.
  • Still a serious warning sign of a future stroke.
