When you take a serious look at the impact of social isolation on health, the statistics are very worrisome.
Social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death to a level that rivals smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. It is associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia, 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke.
Loneliness is also associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.
While the numbers behind social isolation and loneliness can be scary, there are great ways to start reversing the trends and to make positive changes.
