You’ve probably seen warnings about the risks of high blood pressure and the benefits of maintaining normal levels. The American Heart Association classifies healthy ‘normal’ blood pressure as usually lower than 120/80 mm Hg.
But if your blood pressure is 90/60 is it a problem?
The short answer is if you are feeling the following symptoms, then it is too low for you. Low blood pressure is called hypotension and symptoms can include:
- Blurred or fading vision.
- Dizzy or lightheaded feelings.
- Fainting.
- Fatigue.
- Trouble concentrating.
- Upset stomach.
If you have any of these symptoms, try drinking fluids and checking your blood pressure in 30 minutes. If you still feel dizzy or weak call your physician.
The causes of low blood pressure can include dehydration, infection, lack of nutrients, or could even indicate an underlying medical condition. It is important to find out what’s causing low blood pressure so that it can be treated, if needed.
People can have lower blood pressure without symptoms. If you often have low blood pressure readings but feel fine, you might not need treatment. Instead, your physician should know and continue to monitor your blood pressure during routine checkups.
