If you or a senior loved one has diabetes, home monitoring is important to help maintain stable blood glucose levels and prevent complications.
- Blood glucose monitoring can be performed with a glucose meter or in some cases, continuous monitoring devices can be used. Your physician will recommend a monitoring system to meet your needs. If you use a glucose meter keep a log of the results and include the date and time tested.
- Your physician can order a blood test called Hemoglobin A1C to monitor your status. This test measures your average blood sugar levels over a 2-to-3-month period.
- Check your feet daily for any cuts, blisters and redness or any changes in skin or nails. Call your physician if you notice anything concerning.
- Checking your weight on a regular basis is an important measure of how well you are doing with your diet and activity level to maintain stable blood glucose levels.
