The American Heart Association and American Cardiology Association have presented updated, more agressive blood pressure guidelines. These new guidelines encourage a more intensive target of less than 120 mm Hg (systolic) pressure, with a goal of significantly reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Lifestyle goals to help you meet the new guidelines:
- Take your blood pressure on a regular basis
- Eat a heart-healthy diet with more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins.
- Decrease sodium intake by not adding salt when preparing meals.
- Enjoy a walk or other exercise at least twice a week.
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Eliminate or decrease your alcohol intake
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Quit smoking
