Your blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the artery walls as your heart pumps blood.

How is it measured?

When you or your physician checks your blood pressure with a blood pressure monitor it measures two numbers. The first or top number is called the systolic blood pressure which measures your heart pushing out blood. The second or bottom number is called diastolic blood pressure and measures the pressure when your heart relaxes and fills with blood.
