Falls often occur in the bedroom. Getting out of bed in a darkened room while half-awake for a trip to the bathroom is a high-risk situation for a senior with potential for a fall.
Your first step should be to take a walk around the bedroom and inspect for tripping hazards:
- Remove any loose carpets or use two-way tape to secure the rug so your loved one does not trip.
- Walking paths to bathroom and other locations should be cleared of furniture.
- Place night lights on the bedroom walls along the walking path.
- If your parent/loved one lives with you, consider a monitor to hear movement.
If your parent/loved one lives alone and there has been more than one fall, it may be time to consider hiring professional caregiving help or even time to consider transitioning to a retirement community.
